Keeping your makeup bag clean isn’t just about avoiding toxic ingredients. Studies have shown that your makeup bag is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. GROSS! That’s why Clean Beauty by Joy stresses the importance of keeping your beauty bag bacteria-free. Read on to find out how!
Avoid sharing makeup
When it comes to makeup, sharing is not necessarily caring. When you share makeup products and applicators, you’re also spreading bacteria, oils and more to your friends.
Have you ever had a stye? That could be because you shared makeup with someone. The skin around our eyes is especially sensitive. That’s why, according to Eyeque’s official website, eye infections such as pink eye (conjunctivitis) are extremely contagious. A lot of times, people are developing it and are unaware, then when they allow their friend to borrow their concealer, it spreads.
It’s also important to avoid sharing lip products, applicators and all makeup in general. This is because, you might not know how long a friend has had a product-and it could be past its shelf life. In addition, herpes, viruses and other infections can be easily spread through makeup brushes, lip products and more. Even if your friend has no illness, you still are using products that have another person’s oil, bacteria and other-infection causing culprits. If you want to avoid acne, don’t share when it comes to makeup.
Discard old makeup products
Shelf life matters with makeup products. Even if a product contains preservatives, it needs to be tossed after a certain period of time.
Here are a few general recommendations from Cleveland Clinic’s official website on makeup products:
- Toss out your foundation at the 6 month mark if it has been opened or if you see a clear liquid at the top.
- Toss liquid eyeliner after 6 months.
- Lip products are recommended to be thrown out within 6 months or after you have a cold sore.
However, you can wait for 2 or more years before tossing out Clean Beauty by Joy’s foundation. We use airless pumps, which drastically extends the life of our Flawless Finish Foundation without the use of synthetic preservatives. Bonus: Clean Beauty by Joy’s foundation formula is 90% organic!

When to toss out mascara
Since your Mascara wand is notorious for holding onto bacteria, we recommend tossing out your Mascara within 3 months if you regularly use it. Bacteria grows easily in creamy or liquid-based eye makeup and can cause infections. That’s something we all want to avoid. However, if it has not been used, it has a shelf life of 1 year! In other words, if you don’t use Mascara very often, we recommend you avoid buying it in bulk.
Clean Beauty by Joy avoids using synthetic preservatives and our non-toxic mascara lasts just as long as other products! If you’re interested in buying toxin-free and leaping bunny certified mascara, visit our website: Ultra-Lush Lashes Mascara.
Clean your makeup brushes
Clean Beauty by Joy recommends doing a full wash of your brushes at least once a month. But, the more often you do it every month, the better. When you regularly wash your applicators, you rid them of dirt, oils and bacteria. That way, you can protect your skin from unwanted acne, oil and irritation that occurs when you neglect to clean them. I’d recommend finding a gentle soap for cleaning brushes. That way you can refrain from irritating your skin!
I (Joy) use Norwex’s Ultra Power Plus Laundry Detergent to clean my brushes in my bathroom sink. It has proven to be an efficient and easy way to rid my brushes of all the makeup and grime!
