I don’t even wear makeup everyday [gasp!].
I'm Joy Kakabeeke, a follower of Jesus, a wife, mother, self-taught non-toxic living expert, and founder of Clean Beauty by Joy.
I never expected to start a makeup company.
Since 2014 I had been making the necessary changes in my household and personal care products to reduce my use and exposure to harmful chemicals and ingredients. (If you need recommendations, please ask!)
But I was always falling short when it came to makeup products.
I would find a makeup product that claimed to be safe.
I’d read and research the ingredients.
I would find ingredients that were clean and non-toxic,
along with others that were, well, toxic.
I spent HOURS and HOURS researching brands.
I spent HOURS and HOURS researching ingredients in those “clean” brands.
When I finally found a couple of companies that offered safe, non-toxic products, there were two major problems I encountered:
1) The makeup didn’t perform well
And/or
2) It was too expensive
Did I mention I spent HOURS and HOURS researching makeup to buy?
One day, as I was once again devoting MORE time to makeup research, I heard the Lord whisper in my heart “Joy, stop researching what makeup to buy and instead research how to do it yourself.”
HUH? Did I hear that right?
I knew this idea was from God and not from myself, because I knew NOTHING about makeup. I’m a former high school and college level mathematics teacher, not a chemist! So I said
"Alright, Lord, as long as I can create a brand that is truly safe, performs well, and doesn't break the bank, I'll do it."
It's true that God works in mysterious ways. What I thought in my mind was impossible, God made a way. I began my research with the most basic of queries like "how to start a makeup brand" and "manufacturers of makeup".
I continued to find nuggets of information that led me down the right paths - to the right companies and the right people. So, in less than one year, Clean Beauty by Joy was ready to launch.

Isn’t that how most businesses get their start? An idea that solves a problem?
My daughter is a senior in high school this year – time flies! I have been doing all I can to create a healthy, safe environment for our family to live in since she was seven. Before then, I simply was unaware of the dangers of harmful chemicals.
Toxins affect our health more than many people realize — personally, I’ve faced infertility issues, thyroid issues, thyroid eye disease, fibromyalgia, food sensitivities, and severe allergies, to name a few.
And I don’t want anyone to face these same issues, especially my daughter.
