Why You Should Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag

Spring Cleaning: The Makeup Bag Edition

Spring is the time to take inventory of what adds to your life and what subtracts to it. It’s a time of reset- we detox our bodies, homes and minds so that we can grow anew with the plants outside. As many of us know, what we put onto and into our bodies has an impact-for better or for worse-on our health. That’s why while we declutter and clean up our diets, we should also take a closer look at what toxins we are applying to our face in the form of makeup.

The issue with toxins in makeup

Even if we live organic, natural lives, we can be tempted to avoid going toxin-free with our makeup. Can makeup really be THAT harmful if you’re nontoxic in all other aspects? Unfortunately, makeup is not free from the insidious chemicals that can have a drastic impact on your health.

As of May 2020, Ewg’s official website, found “Since 2009, 595 cosmetics manufacturers have reported using 88 chemicals, in more than 73,000 products, that have been linked to cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm.” That’s a HUGE number of manufacturers using formulas that can cause real harm to the body.

Toxins can cause reproductive harm, birth defects, cancer, allergies, skin irritation, autoimmune disorders, acne, rashes, hormonal disruption which then impacts your mental state, and much more. In spite of all of these harmful effects, makeup brands are still including these harmful chemicals in their beauty products. That’s why it’s up to us to take control of our own health.

Clean out your makeup bag

Going through your makeup bag can have many positive benefits to your health. Personally, when I swapped out my toxic products for organic, clean beauty products, I healed extensively. Some benefits of using toxin-free products that have organic, natural ingredients are: better sleep, acne-control, less skin inflammation and more. So, if you’re ready to avoid toxins and clean out your makeup bag, where do you start?

  1. Start with Awareness

There is a long list of toxins that should be avoided, but that are still residing in makeup products today. Among that list are Parabens, Formaldehyde, Phthalates, Phenoxyethanol and more. Be aware of some major toxins that have been proven time and time again to be harmful to your body.

  1. Look at your current products’ labels

Do the labels have natural, organic ingredients or a list of chemicals you can’t pronounce? Some might even have a mixture. Some brands say “we use natural ingredients,” but still have Phenoxyethanol and other chemicals in them. See what you have been placing onto your skin and research the ingredients. Make it an activity and google every single ingredient in your foundation. You might be surprised at what you find out.

  1. Make the swap

It can be overwhelming to have to know what each chemical in every makeup product you have does to your body. To make things simpler when switching to nontoxic makeup products that use organic and natural ingredients, find a couple of brands you can trust. That can save you hours of time at the store reading labels and googling every ingredient. Instead, find cleaner brands that make it their mission to provide you with safe makeup.

A makeup brand you can trust: Clean Beauty by Joy

Clean Beauty by Joy is a makeup brand you can trust to avoid toxic chemicals and use natural, cruelty-free, organic ingredients in our beauty products. Instead of using Formaldehyde and Parabens as preservatives, we use Rosemary Extract, Cinnamon Extract, Thyme Extract and Oregano Leaf Extract. We use ingredients that benefit your skin by bringing down puffiness/redness to your skin and creating that spring glow! Who wouldn’t want that?

Instead of using toxic ingredients that are commonly found in makeup that cause faster-aging, acne and dry skin, we use Aloe and Jojoba oil. Aloe has amazing anti-aging properties and cools your skin’s redness. Not to mention, Aloe has anti-acne properties.

Our friend Jojoba oil is an amazing moisturizing agent and has been shown to help with collagen synthesis! Collagen is important in keeping us youthful in our skin, joints and hair.

Let’s clean out our makeup drawer and take control of our health today. Start by making the swap to clean beauty. Happy spring cleaning!
