Is your makeup aging you?
Wait. Can makeup cause people to look older? Yes. Depending on the makeup’s formula, it could be contributing to wrinkles, fine lines and other skin damage. Of course, as life goes on, we naturally age. That type of aging depends on things like our genetics, the way we move our face, and time. On the other hand, there is environmentally-based aging that determines the pace of our aging process too! When it comes to aging, one thing we CAN control for the most part is our skin’s environment. This includes which makeup products we use. Read on to find out how to create an anti-aging environment for your skin.
3 ingredients to avoid that cause aging
Parabens are something I recommend avoiding at all costs. Research shows that parabens, specifically methylparabens when exposed to UV rays can contribute to aging and skin damage.
According to Prevention’s official website, there was a study showing that methylparabens left mice skin drier, more wrinkled and paler. Mice skin is similar to ours and that is why this study applies to human skin too.
In addition, “The study demonstrated that at high concentrations, methylparaben cuts down on existing collagen levels (and its future production) and can ultimately speed up cell aging and death by increasing levels of toxic molecules, explains Rachel Nazarian, MD, a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.”
In addition to speeding up cell death, parabens also stop oil production the face, leaving the skin dry and more prone to damage. So, when you’re shopping for makeup or any other skin care products, consider looking out for these on the label: propylparaben, benzylparaben, methylparaben, or butylparaben.
Another ingredient that can drain the youth out of your face is alcohol. That’s because alcohol dries out your skin and interferes with your natural face oils. This leads to dryness, dullness and irritation. Weirdly, it’s used in a lot of anti-ageing products, but we recommend you avoid face products with methanol, ethanol, benzyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol on the label.
Sulfates are commonly found in many personal care products, but they could be aging your face prematurely.
According to Today’s official website, “Sodium lauryl sulfate is a harsh emulsifier that is found in body washes, facial cleansers, and soap; it rids the skin of dirt and oil while breaking down precious lipids, the glue that binds skin cells together, keeping them resistant to dryness and damage.”
In other words, sulfates break down the oils that protect your face from the damage and dryness that causes aging. Some personal care brands have caught onto the cons of using sulfates and have created sulfate-free formulas. However, makeup brands still use it.
Be on the look out for labels that include Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate, SLS, or SLES.
Ingredients that combat aging
As we get older, collagen production in our body decreases and that’s what causes aging in the joints and skin. That’s why Aloe has been historically used as an anti-aging treatment–it stimulates collagen production in the skin! How cool. Aloe’s antioxidant properties makes it a great protector from sun damage that also causes premature skin aging.
To add to this, according to Medical News Today, Aloe contains 98% water which makes it hydrating to the skin. It leaves the skin with a supple, youthful look and removes that leathery look that comes as you age. All around, Aloe is highly beneficial to the skin and is a safe, toxin-free ingredient that can be used in beauty products.
Another great toxin-free makeup ingredient known for benefitting your skin is Jojoba oil.
Just like Aloe Vera, it helps with collagen synthesis due to its antioxidant properties. At least one study links antioxidant properties to assisting in collagen synthesis! Bring on the antioxidants, we want that glow.
In addition, Jojoba oil is hydrating and improves the skin’s elasticity. It is actually a humetecant, meaning it attracts water to the top layer of the skin, helping to keep the skin hydrated. Hydration is key to preventing skin damage, dryness and wrinkles!
Green tea is more than a nice beverage to drink to bump away the midday slump! When applied topically, it has an anti-aging effect on your skin! According to one study, green tea extract is able to delay collagen aging due to its antioxidant properties! In addition, much like sun screen, it limits the sun’s rays. That means there will also be less skin damage from UV rays! We love green tea extract!
