Cleaner Alternatives to Parabens in Cosmetic Preservation

Posted by Joy Kakabeeke on

If you’ve ever wondered what keeps your cosmetic products mold-less and bacteria-free, it’s all thanks to preservatives. That’s right, not only food needs to be preserved but so do all of our beauty products! Today, we are taking a deeper look at Parabens’ function as preservatives and their cleaner alternatives.

Parabens + Their Risk

Parabens are a group of commonly-used chemicals that preserve the shelf-life of beauty products. These chemicals are added to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria in your makeup. Sounds good right? Well, they also come with a great risk. These artificial chemicals have been linked to causing harm to the hormones in the body. According to ewg.org’s official website, many studies show that this hormonal disruption can harm the reproductive organs, impact birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer. To add to all of this, there is evidence that it is a skin-irritant.

Knowing this, it’s also important to take note of what these parabens go by in name. Four types of parabens are: propylparaben, isopropylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben. To get a picture of how common these parabens are, Ewg.org’s official website did some research for us.

The chart below shows how many skin and cosmetic products of those listed in their site include one of the four parabens.

So, now you know that Parabens are used in a vast amount of beauty products. That’s not good. But, there’s good news: Clean Beauty by Joy has found and uses effective preservatives that are clean and non-toxic alternatives to Parabens.

Safer + Cleaner Preservatives Clean Beauty by Joy Uses

First, Joy uses an airless pump for her primer and foundation in order to help protect the product. Then, she adds these preservatives listed below to her various makeup products.

  1. Rosemary Leaf Extract

By slowing the oxidation of fatty oils, Rosemary Antioxidant preserves the shelf-life of natural products. It inhibits the growth of unwanted microorganisms in your makeup. It’s a clean and effective way to preserve your makeup products without the risk of hormonal disruption. There is a bonus to this preservative: its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the puffiness/redness in your skin! Basically, Rosemary Leaf Extract has properties that do the opposite of Parabens’ likelihood to irritate your skin.

  1. Thyme Extract

According to Healthline.com’s official website, Thyme oil has antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. These properties make Thyme extract an effective preservative and ingredient to include in Clean Beauty By Joy’s makeup. Rather than potentially causing breast cancer-like parabens can-there has been a study linking Thyme to showing promise in fighting breast cancer! Amazing. There’s more: thyme has been shown to be effective in tackling acne-causing bacteria.

  1. Cinnamon Leaf Extract

According to the study titled “Antibacterial Effects of Cinnamon: From Farm to Food, Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Industries”, Cinnamon use as a preservative in cosmetics can help to avoid bacterial degradation and lower the risk of infection caused by cosmetics. And, fun fact, cinnamon could be effective in fighting some infectious diseases!

  1. Oregano Leaf Extract

Oregano Leaf Extract is an effective preservative used to inhibit the growth of molds and bacterias in cosmetics. In addition, there are benefits to your skin due to the nutrients in the oil. Oregano oil is high in vitamins A, C, E, and K! It can help make your skin glow. Who doesn’t want that?
