3 Simple Changes to Reduce Exposure to Harmful Chemicals

Posted by Joy Kakabeeke on

The U.S. has a big chemical problem. And the majority of the chemicals we are exposed to are neither regulated or tested. Truthfully, we do not know the effects of the chemicals used in our daily cleaners, cosmetics and personal care products.

According to an article on the guardian’s official website, “Of the more than 40,000 chemicals used in consumer products in the US, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, less than 1% have been rigorously tested for human safety.”

This means that we are repeatedly exposed to potentially toxic chemicals DAILY and have NO clue what’s in them. Not sure about you, but I find that unsettling.

I have firsthand experience with chronic fatigue, insomnia, fibromyalgia, and other rheumatic conditions caused by toxic chemicals. Once I learned about body burden and the impact that the exposure to daily toxins had on my health, it changed everything. I swapped out my cleaning products, personal care items and created a toxin-free beauty brand.

Taking control of how many toxins I was exposed to daily in my home led to a dramatic improvement in my health. Your health is also within your control. Read on to find out 3 simple swaps you can make this month to create a healthier home and healthier you.

3 simple swaps we can make to radically reduce exposure to toxins:

  1. Laundry detergent. A lot of people don’t think about this, but our laundry detergent stays on our clothes that we wear daily. You can develop acne on your face when you use the wrong laundry detergent (think pillow cases) and suffer from a number of health problems if you use the wrong laundry detergent.

Among the toxic chemicals found in laundry detergent are sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium laureth ether sulfate (SLS/SLES), phosphates, fragrance, and more.

Since there are so many different toxic chemicals to look out for, I prefer to find a product that I know is toxin-free! Personally, I use and sell Norwex products. Norwex offers so many different types of detergents including detergent strips. You can check it out here: Norwex Laundry. (I receive a commission when you buy these products).

  • Soaps, shower gels and lotions.
  • According to Environmental Working Group, women put an average of 168 unique chemicals onto their bodies everyday. Due to our increased use of personal care products, women are exposed to more chemicals.

Some of the toxins found in personal care products include: sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, triclocarban, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing agents, and all synthetic fragrances.

You’d be amazed by how much it lowers your exposure to toxins when you swap out  chemical-filled shampoos, shower gels and lotions for toxin-free products that you trust. I recommend surfing the internet for toxin-free, organic personal care products to find one you love that fulfills your beauty needs!

  • Makeup
  • The EU law bans 1,328 chemicals from cosmetics that are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm or birth defects. In comparison, the U.S. FDA has only banned or restricted 11 chemicals from cosmetics. Because there are fewer regulations and tests in the United States, we are responsible for finding safe beauty products.

Some toxins that are found in daily cosmetics include parabens, formaldehyde, fragrance, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, and more. These ingredients have been linked to reproductive health issues, auto-immune disorders, cancer, and skin irritation.

Contrary to many beauty products, Clean Beauty by Joy’s makeup products were created with your health in mind. I sought to develop a high-performing makeup brand that is safe for your skin and body, hydrating and long-lasting. The percentage of organic ingredients in each product is also disclosed to you. We offer nontoxic and high-performing eyeshadow, eyebrow pomade, mascara, lipstick and lip gloss, eye crayon, foundation and primer.
