Studies Show: Wearing Makeup Boosts Confidence

Posted by Joy Kakabeeke on

As a beauty company, we obviously love makeup! We believe that organic, toxin-free makeup holds so many benefits for women. That’s why we wanted to dive deeper into why makeup is universally-used, how it benefits us and the potential drawbacks of wearing it such as the ever-lurking toxic formulas. We even asked our Clean Beauty by Joy fans why YOU wear makeup. Take a look at what we found out!

The “Lipstick Effect.”

A major benefit of wearing makeup is its positive impact on self-esteem. This is known as the “lipstick effect,” which, according to Huffpost's official website, “is a known psychological phenomenon in which wearing makeup can give individuals a confidence boost by making them feel more physically attractive, increasing feelings of self-esteem, attitude, and personality.” I think that almost all women can verify this effect. Makeup especially helps when we are doing things that are new or nerve-wracking such as job interviews, first dates, or giving a presentation. It gives a boost of confidence which can perk us up and help us shake off those nerves.

Even more so, a study carried out by researchers from Harvard Medical School USA and the University of Chieti, Italy found that female students who had makeup on received higher grades compared to those who did not. For the study, 186 female undergraduate students were asked to take a simulated university exam. There were three randomly assigned groups that consisted of wearing makeup, listening to positive music and face coloring. While those who listened to positive music performed well, those who wore makeup outperformed them. This can show that makeup benefits wearers cognitively. Our tip? If you have a heavy work day, go ahead and leave some extra time in the morning to apply your makeup. It could help!

Why do you wear makeup?

“I wear makeup because it makes me feel confident, beautiful, and intentional. Makeup is my way of expressing myself.” - Hannah Forden, 26

“I think of the face as a blank canvas. Then you put the foundation, cover up, eye makeup and blush on and suddenly you have a beautiful painting. That's why I wear makeup. I want to be a beautiful painting.” - Tasha Thompson, 53

“I wake up each morning, bathe and put on my makeup. It doesn’t matter if I am staying home or going somewhere. My makeup makes me presentable to me and gives me self-confidence that I could be in the presence of others at any time, anywhere.” - Brenda Magierka, 74

I love that all different ages and backgrounds of women enjoy wearing makeup. It’s a true mark of the positive impact it can have on women. Makeup’s benefits range from confidence, protection from the sun and free-radicals, boosting your mentality, increasing productivity, and more. When used for good, makeup can bring so much confidence, joy and a wonderful tradition to women’s lives. So, we know the great benefits of wearing makeup now. Let’s find out one reason people avoid wearing makeup.

Toxins: a drawback to wearing makeup.

One major drawback to wearing makeup is the awareness of the toxic ingredients that are used in the formulas. Some makeups have been known to cause acne, allergies and can even age you faster. In addition to that, they can cause cancer, skin irritation and hormonal issues, including infertility. Some toxins to look out for include Parabens, Formaldehyde, MEAs, Sulfates and Phthalates. These toxic ingredients can cause people to avoid makeup altogether. But, then they never get to reap the benefits of wearing it!
